Type 1 Surge Protection Device FAQ: 10 Most Asked Questions Answered

A Type 1 surge protection device sits at the service entrance and handles partial lightning current, but the specifications behind it confuse many installers and specifiers. This article answers the ten questions asked most often about Type 1 SPDs in a direct, quotable format. It explains what a Type 1 device actually protects against, how it differs from Type 2 and Type 3, and when installation becomes mandatory. It clarifies datasheet terms including Iimp and the 10/350 microsecond waveform, sets out where the device belongs in the distribution board, and covers backup breaker requirements. Further answers address realistic service life, how to recognise a failed unit, whether a Type 1 device can work alone without downstream protection, and which configuration suits TN-S, TN-C and TT earthing systems.

Industrial Surge Protection Devices: 5 Key Applications by Sector

Industrial surge protection devices are not interchangeable across industries. An oil and gas facility with explosive atmospheres, a water treatment plant with dispersed outdoor pumps, a substation, a regulated pharmaceutical line and a VFD-dense machine shop each face different surge sources and installation constraints. This guide maps SPD selection to five industrial sectors, identifying the main surge sources in each, the critical equipment at risk, and the recommended device type and installation point. It covers lightning exposure on remote wellheads and pump stations, switching transients from large motors and variable frequency drives, and the vulnerability of PLCs, sensors and SCADA systems on the plant floor. A sector matrix summarises device type and installation location at a glance, giving specifiers and contractors a fast reference for matching industrial surge protection devices to the real risk profile of each site.

How to Choose a Surge Protector Supplier: 10 Criteria for B2B Buyers

Choosing a surge protector supplier shapes the quality of every device a distributor or panel builder sells for years, yet many buyers compare only unit price. This guide sets out ten practical criteria for evaluating a surge protection device manufacturer: certifications against IEC 61643 and UL 1449, in-house impulse testing capability, manufacturing track record, product range depth across Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, DC and PV, OEM tooling lead times, cross-reference support, supply-chain traceability, production capacity, warranty terms, and export documentation. It also explains how to verify a supplier through samples, test reports and factory audits before placing a first order, and lists the red flags that should end a conversation early. Written for B2B buyers sourcing from China, the guide turns supplier selection into a repeatable checklist rather than a judgement call.
